Project: Finding a Home

On average, people who live in the United States move to new homes about every seven years. That means that every seven years, people just like you are driving around neighborhoods, checking out schools, walking through complete strangers’ homes, talking with bankers, and spending large amounts of money. The process is a long and sometimes difficult one, but also one that can bring with it a lot of excitement and joy if you find your dream home and can afford it.

This project is intended to help you learn more about estimating the value of your home (if you own a house and are planning to sell) or the value of a home that your would like to buy.

To Do: Bring the following printouts to class on the due date.

1. Go to www.zillow.com. Navigate the website to become familiar with the information offered.

a. Pretend that you own the house at an address of your choice. Find out how much the house is estimated to be worth if you wanted to sell it. Type the address in the Find Homes search window then click Go. Print the zestimate.

b. Compare the house with other similar houses in the neighborhood. On the pop-up box that contains the information regarding your house, click onComparables. Print the list with the zestimates for the similar houses in the neighborhood.

c. Pretend that you have upgraded the house and find the zestimate for the new value. On the pop-up box that contains the information regarding your house, click on the address. Click on Create, next to My Estimate. Click on Create your own estimate. You can go through five steps, make changes, and add improvements to the original house value. Once you made a change click Update Value. To move to the next window, click Next. You can choose a few homes in the neighborhood to compare to your house. If you don’t choose any, Zillow will choose the comparables for you.Print the page that has the last step.

d. Pretend you want to upgrade to a larger house. Find an approximately 2,500 sq. feet house in Orange that you would like to buy. Clear the address from the Find Homes search window but leave the city and the state then click Go. In the filter area on the left side uncheck all check boxes except for the For Sale checkbox. Narrow down your search by changing the house size. Narrow down your search even more by changing any other of the variables listed on the left side. Choose a house and print the zestimate.

2. Go to www.Redfin.com Navigate the website to become familiar with it. Repeat the exercises listed in item # 1 above
